| Garden Season |
|
We live in a time of environmental awareness.
Unfortunately, most of us don't realize that even the
simplest of activities can be a waste of Earth's
resources. Eighty percent of those who water their
gardens, lawns or flowers are doing it wrong. What's the
big deal, you say? Besides being wasteful, you're
inviting problems to your yard in the way of plant
disease, fungi and insects.
Here are some simple ways to get the most out of your
watering time.
1. Help your plants grow stronger roots by watering them
to a depth of 10-12 inches. Once roots reach the
subsoil, the moisture level will remain fairly
consistent. Watering your plants a few minutes every day
doesn't help them to grow better, it only means they
will dry out faster. Water them once a week for about an
hour. They will thank you with bright, healthy foliage.
2. Water your plants in the morning, before the sun is
too high in the sky. If you wait until the evening you
risk fungal disease that attacks when leaves remain wet
overnight. Watering during the day is okay but will
increase your water bill; the heat of the sun leads to
quicker evaporation, so you're using more water to
provide the same amount of nutrition.
Tip: If you are a city dweller, keep in mind that water usage is
typically less in the morning than at night; this means
a higher water pressure, hence less time spent watering.

| New For You |
Ordinarily this area is for a one or more new product
entering the market. This week we discovered a entire
new type of grocery store chain only 24 months old that
excited us.
Fresh & Easy it the greenest green food store we've come
across. The Riverside, Cali distribution center boasts
the largest solar panel roof in North America, the size
of 7 football fields. They pride themselves in that
their stores utilize food cooling so well the stores
themselves require no air conditioning.
What we liked best of course is Fresh & Easy's
commitment to community.
Fresh herb prices have continued to climb to the point
we hard a problem recommending them in spite of
realizing how important they are to our good health.
Toward the end of the business day Fresh & Easy do
markdowns of some produce and meats to around 50%-65%
off.

In case there isn't one yet, check back. They are
opening 9 more in the city where I live before the end
of the year.

Fascinating Fact answer: Once.
Those "re-fried" beans you've come to know and love are
based on a translation error. Literally translated,
"frijoles refritos" means “well fried" beans – not
re-fried. |

Use inexpensive commercial dried herbs from grocery
chains. We like deep discount Grocery Outlet but others
near you may serve as well.

if sugar restriction is your issue.
In my own effort to lower salt consumption I there are many spices and dried herbs
that flavor foods far
better than plain ole' salt ever did.
Yes, adding a pinch of salt still makes a baked potato
tasty. So does ground dried rosemary, basil, or mint
leaves.
Rather than buying the expensive Magic Bullet sold on TV
infomercials with those nifty little 8oz screw-on
grinder feature plus replacement caps for storage in the
same plastic glass, I found Pennys chain stores offer an
even better version with all the same bells and whistles
for half the price.
This makes grinding dried flavors such as green
onion tops or tough celery stalks into fine powder
a quick and easy task.
Once rinsed out and dried, I use my old spice containers
to hold unique and personal spice-mixtures. Labeled and
stored in a convenient locale, they can spruce up the
blandest recipes. I have over 30 different healthy and
tasty
seasonings sitting on the countertop beside the stove.

Outdoor season in on the horizon and the fragrance of grilled food is already in the air.
Save time and money by buying items such as Italian sausage patties when on sale. Grill them up or use smoke flavoring, crystals or liquid and cook on grid over a regular stove.
Wrap each meal portion individually. Freeze.
Each time your recipe for spaghetti, ravioli, or other Italian meal calls for it, just thaw one, chop and add to dish. That grill taste is great and it makes dinner prep quick, easy, and inexpensive.
Far less waste at times when you want a half-size lasagna dish.
This clever trick comes in handy for grilled chicken breasts, too. Grill, slice, then freeze.
Need to whip up a casserole or dish up homemade tacos? You have the basics all ready to go. It's much cheaper than store-bought prepared chicken strips.
